Low Calorie Alcoholic Drinks

In today's society, being overweight is on everyone's mind. With all of the commercials about how you can lose weight, you can't help but think about your waist size. Even the alcohol industry is in on the craze with low calorie or light drinks. That's what we're here for. At Good Spirit Mixers we want to make it easy for you to make great tasting, low calorie alcoholic drinks. Using a drink mixer can take much of the guesswork out of how many calories are in your drink.

Many people believe that drinking leads to weight gain. Believe it or not many studies have indicated that people who drink in moderation (one to two drinks per day in the US) are less likely to become obese than those who don't drink at all. Of course what you choose to drink figures prominently into the caloric equation. This is one of the benefits of drinking in moderation – remembering moderation is what is important. Still, moderately drinking 800 calorie Margaritas or creamy Pina Coladas will do damage to any diet.

So it is key to count the calories you in your mixed drinks. As long as the alcohol you choose to mix with our Good Spirit Mixers is low in calories, your worries about your calorie intake are minimized. Our Good Spirit Mixers are perfect for anyone who wants a low calorie alcoholic sugar free drink.

Here are a few tips to help you with your cocktail calorie count.

Making Low Calorie Mixed Drinks

Basically the calories in your cocktail are made up of the liquor, the mixer and the size of your drink.

For the liquor a good rule of thumb is to count 64 – 69 calories for each ounce of distilled spirits. Popular distilled spirits include Brandy, Gin, Rum, Scotch, Tequila, Vodka and Whiskey. Most cocktails use a jigger for measurement, which is 1.5 fluid ounces of liquid so you usually can count at least 96 calories per drink. What to watch out for are distilled beverages that are bottled with added sugars and flavorings. This includes alcoholic beverage brands like Grand Marnier, Cointreau, and Frangelico to name a few. These along with most flavored Schnapps can pack hundreds of calories per ounce and add unneeded calories to your cocktail. A hint you probably will find extra calories is to look for the seven letter word "liqueur" on the bottle label. The added vowels to the word "liquor" is your clue that what is inside probably contains added sugars and flavorings, and thus extra calories.

For the mixer to keep your calories to a minimum choose a zero or low calorie mixer. Water or Club soda are zero calories and sadly, add zero taste to the spirit. It is our guess that is why they have named the mixed drink with ingredients of Vodka and Club Soda the SKINNY BITCH ( We are not kidding ). Not to worry, flavorful low calorie drinks mixers are readily available.

When you compare our drink mix with other it is really surprising how many calories are in their mixes. Our Sour Mix has 0 calories while Mr. and Mrs. T's has 90 per serving. Our Margarita Mix has 10 and Jose Cuervo has an astounding 100 calories per serving! You can check out our FAQ pages for more comparisons.

Another tip to making low calorie drinks is to watch the size of your cocktail. According to research from the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab people tend to put about 20 – 30 % more alcohol in a short glass than a tall one. And obviously if you added extra alcohol you just added extra calories to your drink.

You can also substitute a flavored "mocktail" between your cocktails for a low calorie hydrator. We like ur Watermelon Martini or Sour Apple Martini mixer with club soda. This way our drinks still have cocktail colors but no calories.

Just because you are watching your calorie intake doesn't mean that you are not able to drink. No need to buy into the alcohol and calorie stigma in today's society. When you drink your Mojito, just add your favorite rum to the Good Spirits Mojito Mix and you've only added 5 calories to your daily diet ( plus the amount of calories in the rum ). We have made it that simple.

There is a vast amount of data that supports your drinking habits and its relationship with alcohol. It all comes down to moderation as previously stated. You can find more information about this at Alcohol: Problems and Solutions. This is a great website for answering any of your alcohol related questions.

Our goal for you is to enjoy the party and keep to your lower calorie lifestyle plan. You can check out our great low calorie mixed drinks under our recipes section or under each mixes recipes. Don't let calories run your lifestyle, be a Bevolutionist and Drink with Good Spirits. Cheers!
