Description
The art of Purvis Young is as easy to recognize as it is difficult to define. Often referred to as an Outsider Artist, Purvis paints what he knows and feels with the direct stroke of an Urban Expressionist. Street scenes, angels, horses, trucks and trains are depicted with the unpretentious grace of a Sumi-e artist. The consistency and earnestness of this large body of work creates a visual harmony that is as audible as an old bronze bell.
Joining in the harmonic is East Village artist, Vee. Growing up in New York in the beat era, she studied at NYU, the Brooklyn Museum and at the Art Students League under Knox Martin. Vee participated in the birth of the movement defined by her friends, Andy, Jean-Michel and Keith. Her work reflects experiences of a past that is rich, warm and worn. Images of cupie dolls, crows, clowns and dragonflies are painted and stenciled on found objects and old wooden crates. It is the clacking sound of wood hitting wood.
Contemporary Folk Artist JoAnn Nava developed an old world urban esthetic growing up in the south Bronx in the 1950s. Chinatown, fire escapes and street lamps are recurring themes. Childhood memories are frozen in deep reds, ivories and black milk paint finishes. The imagery is quirky and innocent and preserves the magic of the ordinary. Her tone is as playful as a bamboo flute.
When artists come together in the right configuration, it is always a better result than an artist playing alone.
